- Bill Roach
Bill Roach has ridden nearly 60,000 miles training for and competing in long distance
bicycle races - the equivalent of crossing the United States almost twenty times. His competition
career focused primarily on 24-hour bike races and cross-state races. These competitions
typically required racing more than 300 miles in a 24-hour period. He was a support rider for the
late Dr. Bob Breedlove when Dr. Breedlove set a record for crossing the United States twice in
twenty-two and a half days. He has worked with other national level bike racers throughout his
career.
Spinning became an important part of Bill’s life when began to use it to regain some of
the fitness lost after the conclusion of his long distance bike racing career. “I’m very passionate
about Spinning,’ he says. “It has made a real difference in my life. I believe it is important for
all of us to do something physically difficult nearly every day of our lives. For me, Spinning is
one of the best ways to do that. No matter your current level of fitness, the best way is simply to
start.”
“It’s also important to me that Spinning can so easily be done in the company of people
who become your friends,” he said. “There is nothing quite like doing something challenging, in the
company of like-minded people.”
In addition to teaching six Spinning classes a week, writing a local newsletter on
Spinning topics and mentoring new Spinning instructors; Bill recently became certified as a
Personal Trainer by the National Academy of Sports Medicine.
Also an advocate for bicyclists in Iowa, Bill is the winner of state and national awards for
his work in securing passage of bicyclists rights legislation in Iowa. He is a former President of
the League of Iowa Bicyclists and the Des Moines Cycle Club.
Bill served as Executive Officer in the Iowa Attorney General’s Office until his
retirement in 2010. During his 30-year career there, he worked on communications,
administration and public policy initiatives. In particular he worked on consumer protection
initiatives, crime prevention programs, and public health issues.
Bill has been married for over thirty years to Annette Lund, a mental health therapist.
They live in West Des Moines and are passionate about fitness, golf, reading and entertaining
friends.
“I invite you to come try Spinning,” he said. “Whatever your current level of fitness, you
can challenge yourself in a friendly and supportive environment.”
