Peace, my name is Jamila K Wilson. I was born and raised down South and Midwest (although Ilinois is more southern than you think).
I lived in various parts of North Philadelphia and worked in youth development and with Freedom Schools until 2006, when I moved to Louisiana to support the recovery and rebuilding efforts of New Orleans after the hurricanes of Katrina and Rita. While in Louisiana I began to practice yoga excessively; yoga became my outlet for dealing with the harsh realities of rebuilding a city and motivating it’s youth.
I returned to Philadelphia in 2008, continuing my practice in local gyms. It was not until happening upon Wake Up Yoga while riding the bus that I learned about the studio.
In 2009 I decided that I wanted to take that next step and explore the possibilities of incorporating yoga full time in my life. I am an avid believer that when you ask the Universe for clarity and direction you must be fully open and receptive for what it brings you.
In July 2009 I lost my job and September 2009 I began the Wake Up Yoga Teacher Training Program!
It was a rewarding experience that continues to unfold new realms of growing and learning.
When asked to describe my teaching style, I simply say, “its a journey into Self, an exploration of your personal truth, and an opportunity to witness the true essence of who you were created to be.”
I extend love, peace, and balance to you all, Namaste. Ashe.
