I began as a substitue instructor and was asked to take a Tuesday-Thursday class. The members responded well to my sense of humor and dedication to fitness. The class grew and several months later, I was asked to take an additional Mon-Wed-Fri class. I had actually taken water aerobics with this class for a couple years before I was certified. The class members easily accepted my new role as instructor and in return, I honored their commitment to attending classes faithfully by challenging them with new moves, different routines, adding more equipment. With every change, they stayed open minded and adapted.
I like to have fun in my classes. We laugh a little, we grunt occasionally and sometimes I get help counting down to the end of an exercise, especially if they're ready to move on. I teach a large age/fitness range but everyone leaves classes saying what a great workout they had. I'm big on each individual working at his or her own pace and level but also pushing and encouraging our members to give it all they've got, reminding them that they have to push themselves to progress. I teach a mix of cardio, cardio intervals and strength training/toning, depending on the equipment we're using. The key is to keep things upbeat and positive. Enjoy life, whatever it is you're doing at that moment and to proud of what you've accomplished at the end of each day.
