Serena Garcia has been a dancer since 1974, beginning her studies in classical ballet, tap, jazz, and drama at Gail Moore’s Dance Studio, then on to Eleanor Brook’s School of Dance both located on St. Simons Island, Georgia. She continued her dance studies and performance while matriculating at Savannah State University as a member of the SSC Dance Ensemble from 1989-1993. While there, she performed classical ballet and Alvin Ailey influenced modern dance, along with jazz and traditional West African dance. Serena also served as a Student Activities Department resident dance choreographer (1990-1992) and taught modern dance for the City of Savannah Leisure Services Bureau’s Summer Youth Program (1992). In 1992, Serena competed for and won the title of Miss Savannah State College after performing a liturgical piece as part of her presentation. She graduated with honors in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree in mass communications.
