Paula Mekkelsen

As a Licensed and practicing clinical therapist for over 30 years, I have always believed that engaging in some sort of fun and movement is important for our health, mental health and overall well-being. Since I literally sit still all day at work, I make it a priority to find activities that keep me balanced. Over the years I have learned to integrate various workout programs into my schedule (even while away on vacation) such as yoga, running, spinning, weight lifting/training, pilates, boot camp, swimming, hiking and so on. A couple of years ago I heard about Zumba from my son, a college student at West Virginia University: "Mom, everyone goes to Zumba. The classes are packed. It's huge!"

In May 2010, I went to my first Zumba class and fell in love with it immediately. Zumba offers an introduction to and appreciation for various international music, is a great fitness challenge, offers something different then my 'usual' workout, can be interactive with others and has tons of energy that just radiates in the room. Zumba is a great interval workout and truly feels like a dance party. In August 2010,  I became certified to teach Zumba and I love it! The reason is simple: every class is a balst, an excellent workout and truly feels like a party!

I still practice as a clinical therapist during the day (aka as my "day job"), then teach Zumba in the evening- the best of both worlds ;)!
