A 46 year old South African, with US citizenship,  has coached over 25 years during his coaching career.  Having competed on the Professional tour for two years he then completed a B.A. and LLB. at Rhodes University. 

 

On graduating he coached at the Van Der Meer Tennis Academy in Hilton Head, S.C. for five years on their World Class Junior and Player Development program, training and traveling with players on the ITF, ATP and WTA circuits worldwide in over 60 countries.

During this time he worked with the following players: Amanda Coetzer (WTA #21) Grant Stafford (ATP#80),  Donna Faber (WTA#45), Naoko Sawamatsu (WTA 20) and Neville Godwin (ATP#70) amongst other world class players.  In 1994/5 he also worked for the Van Der Meer organisation in Japan.

 

In 1996 Ashley went to Hong Kong, China as the National Coach to organize their National player development program of 350 players and 40 coaches and coach the National tennis teams.   He coached and captained their World Youth Cup, World Junior Tennis, Federation Cup, Davis Cup, Asian Games and All China Games teams from 1996-2000.  During his tenure there Hong Kong produced two world top 50 junior ITF players, the Davis Cup team moved from group 3 to group 2 and the Federation Cup team reached the semifinals of Group 1 in 1997.  Additionally the Junior Davis Cup and World Junior Tennis team reached the world group (top 16 nations in the world) in 2001, the first time in the country’s history.

 

 In 2001 Ashley started a Tennis Academy in Atlanta, Georgia which now has a enrollment of over 100 players and a number of strong national players, many players on college scholarships and players who have won Pro circuit titles.

 

He has conducted tennis coaching clinics for coaches in Japan, South Africa, U.S.A, Hong Kong Tennis Association, Singapore Tennis Association and for the Georgia High School Coaches, and US High School Coaches Association.

 

He has produced  DVD’s on movement in tennis, named “Movement for Tennis – The Art and Science” and “Tennis Technique – Understanding the Game”

 

He has been  a PTR member since 1990, completed the USTA High Performance Coaching Program in 2002, been to many ITF Worldwide coaches conferences all over the world and is a National Strength and Conditioning Association member.

 

Ashley competes in triathlons and has completed multiple Ironman Triathlons, road races, trained in martial arts and is married to Dawn and has two wonderful children – Michael and Sophia.
