As a fitness enthusiast all my life, I began teaching aerobics during my college years at Valparaiso University. Although my full-time career after college focused on marketing for consumer goods companies, I continued to work part-time in the fitness industry for the next 10+ years. When I left the corporate world after the birth of my first child in 2003, I took a more serious approach to the fitness industry and received certification from the American Council on Exercise. At that time I was also certified by Healthy Moms in pre- and post- natal fitness and began teaching to that special population, as well as teaching to more traditional fitness audiences.
In the past few years I have been certified in and taught a variety of other specialty classes, including Zumba, cycling, kickboxing and more. Currently I teach a variety of classes at the Foglia Y in Lake Zurich, IL. Last year, I co-developed a new class format (Box 'n Burn) for our Y which is one of the most popular and highly attended classes available there today. In addition to traditional populations, I have also led classes geared toward youth and seniors.
Beyond group exercise classes, I have used my fitness knowledge and background as a speaker for a variety of groups where I haved covered motivation for new moms, parenting & fitness, and general exercise information. On a volunteer basis, I am in process of launching a "Girls on the Run" site at a local elemetary school, which is a program that combines training for a 5K running event with lessons designed to promote positive choices and an active lifestyle for girls from 8 - 13.
My experience teaching a wide variety of formats to a vast array of participants over the past 20 years, combined with my passion for fitness and my knowledge of exercise physiology, enables me to encourage others to pursue a healthy lifestyle and achieve their fitness goals as I serve in my role as a professional fitness instructor.
