Carlos Goffi

Carlos Goffi began playing tennis at the age of five at the Tennis Club of Sao Paulo, where his father was President. He represented his native Brazil in many renowned tournaments such as the South American Championships, Orange Bowl, Wimbledon and Galea Cup, to name a few. In 1970, Carlos became one of the pioneer student athletes from his native Brazil, to receive a scholarship at the University of Corpus Christi in Texas, and during his senior year at the University of Kansas, where he graduated with degrees in Psychology and Business Administration.
His multi-faceted entrepreneurial career began as a professional tennis coach and author. Carlos’ coaching career began in 1975 at the Port Washington Tennis Academy in NY, by recommendation from his mentor Harry Hopman. He became its Junior Program Director and worked closely with the Academy’s top junior players, which included John McEnroe. Carlos is also a former coach to John and his brother Patrick on the ATP Tour.
He has been the Director of Tennis at Orange Lawn Tennis Club, NJ, where he hosted the ATP pre-US Open tournament, and the Director of Tennis at Seabrook Island, SC, where he was instrumental in the design of its tennis center and surrounding Courtside Villas. Together with Peter Fleming, they developed its tennis program into one of the top tennis resort destinations.
His best seller Tournament Tough, published worldwide in 1984, led him to other junior tennis development contributions including the publishing of Junior Tennis magazine; a nationwide tour of Tournament Tough Parent/Player Workshops sponsored by Nike, Dunlop, Ray-Ban and the USTA; the Nike Tournament Tough Camps, which he has personally directed for 30 years; as well as many tennis grass roots and charitable activities.
During his 40 years of coaching, Carlos has conducted numerous clinics and camps at various countries. He has been a keynote speaker of numerous tennis conventions and conferences worldwide, including the USPTA National Conventions, USTA National Teachers Conferences and PTR Conferences. In 1991, he was voted by his peers as PTR Coach of the Year. Carlos has been Director of Tennis Promotions for Dunlop Slazenger and Director of Tennis Marketing for Nike in Latin America.
Recently, his company Tennis Resorts operated the Tennis Complex at ESPN Wide World of Sports at Disney World where he hosted major events including Prince Harry’s Invictus Games. His son Josh is a former ATP/Davis Cup player, a two-time ITA Regional Assistant Coach of the Year (Arizona State University and Duke University). Josh is the Men’s Head Tennis Coach for the University of South Carolina and the 2013 SEC Coach of the Year.
