Christina M. Navarro is a performing artist and choreographer that has studied and performed a variety of Afro-Caribbean folkloric and popular music and dance styles from Cuba, Haiti, and Puerto Rico for the past decade. She has trained with Susana Arenas from Havana, Cuba, (Raíces Profundas), Famila Cepeda from Santurce, Puerto Rico, Florencia Pierre and Djenane St. Juste from Petion-ville, Haití. Her training and experience have led her to work with such groups as Arenas Dance Co., La Mixta Criolla, Familia Cepeda, SFSU’s Afro-Cuban Jazz Ensemble, Grupo Folklorico Aguacero and Afoutayi Traditional Haitian Dance Company. Christina has performed in SF’s Carnaval, at the Palace of Fine Arts, Cowell Theater, Brava, the Mission Cultural Center, La Peña, and various other venues around the SF Bay Area. In addition, she has also choreographed for the Ethnic Dance Festival and various other shows striving to use performance art as an education tool as well as vehicle for healing, cultural awareness and social change. Christina currently holds a Bachelor’s degree in Dance Ethnology with an emphasis in Caribbean Cultures (2009), and is interested in pursuing a Masters degree in Caribbean Art History or Afro-Latin Studies with an emphasis in culture and performance in the near future. In the meantime, Christina continues to study, educate, choreograph and perform Caribbean music and dance around the San Francisco Bay Area and takes great pride and care in maintaining the integrity of these living, traditional forms of artistic expression.
