I have been a “gym rat” since I was a teenager. Group fitness has always been my joy and passion. After many years as a student of high-impact aerobics, step aerobics, Nia, yoga, tai chi, belly dance, strength training, kickboxing, boot camp and dance fitness, I finally felt a calling last year to become an instructor.

Since September 2010, I have taught Zumba classes at various locations in the Durango area, including three corporate environments for worksite wellness programs. In January 2010, I completed a rigorous program to become certified in group fitness through the Aerobics & Fitness Association of America. As an AFAA-trained professional, I stress safety, modifications (including low- and high-impact options) and proper body mechanics so you’ll get an effective workout without hurting yourself. In my classes, you'll find a mix of elite athletes, children, obese people, seniors, and pregnant ladies... all happily dancing side by side.

I am also certified to teach Piyo, a Pilates/Yoga fusion class by Beachbody. It combines strength, flexibility and balance in a fitness-oriented, upbeat format. I also have the American College of Exercise's Group Fitness Leadership Speciality certification, as well as the brand-new Zumba Pro-Skills certification. I'm certified as a Health Coach through the American Council on Exercise. I am a firm believer in continuing education and I strive to learn and grow as a fitness professional.  I have no formal dance training, but I “feel the music” in my heart; and I honor personal expression in myself and my students.

I grew up in Hemet, Southern California, and graduated from the University of California, San Diego, in 1991. I have been a newspaper journalist (editing, writing, graphic design and marketing) for more than 20 years. I lived in the Bay Area for three years and met my husband at the Contra Costa Times newspaper. We moved to Durango in 1998. I currently work full-time as a Magazine Editor for The Durango Herald in Durango, Colorado. I am married and have two wonderful children, ages 13 and 9. We love to travel and are thrilled with Fitness Pro Travel opportunities.
