Mariam Gilmer offered yoga classes at her home for three years until Oct. 1, 2008.  Since then, Mariam is offering her yoga classes at Briarcliff United Methodist Church.  As of August 9, 2009, Mariam is offering a yoga class at Oak Grove United Methodist Church as well.

Mariam founded Decatur Montessori School (DMS) in 1993 and was the school’s director for ten years.

Mariam has earned a bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Georgia State University after she transferred from Webster University in the Netherlands.  Additionally, Mariam earned her AMI (Association Montessori Internationale) teaching certificate in 1991.

After years of practicing yoga as a student, Mariam started her yoga training with YogaFit in 2005.  YogaFit is an organization that provides training for yoga instructors with Hatha yoga designed for mainstream.  Mariam, in addition to the training for general population has had training for practicing yoga with children, pre natal, post partum and seniors.

Hatha Yoga is one of the several types of yoga, and it is the most commonly used form of yoga in the United States.  Hatha yoga focuses on physical aspects of yoga practice.   The goal is help us create balance and flexibility in our bodies and complement the activities of our daily lives.

Mariam’s classes are designed for mixed levels so beginners and advanced yoga students benefit from these practices.  We practice the poses to create strength, flexibility, endurance and balance.  The experience is non-judgmental and non-competitive.

Currently, Mariam’s Classes take place on Tuesdays at 10:30AM, Wednesdays at 6:00PM and on Saturdays at 9:30AM at Briarcliff United Methodist Church.  On Sundays, we practice at Oak Grove United Methodist Church at 5PM.
