Jonathan MacCaul

My name is Jonathan MacCaul and I have been down many different paths in life. Like most individuals, I didn’t just know what I wanted to do for a living. I have always had a diverse number of interests but didn’t know what I was most passionate about. One thing that has always remained consistent is my desire and drive to continually learn how to take better care of myself. This would allow me to remain strong and healthy and therefore get the most from life. This is how I have found my way down the path to Fitness and Health Promotion.

Martial arts have been a significant part of my life from a young age. I would say it has very much contributed to my physical, emotional and mental development. Training enhanced my self esteem, respect for others, and gave me confidence. While living in Japan, I competed in numerous Brazilian Jui-Jitsu and grappling competitions. I also won a professional level mixed martial arts fight. I currently instruct submission wrestling and Muay Thai kickboxing at the YMCA.

Four years ago while attending the Fitness and Health Promotion program at St Lawrence College, I was introduced to yoga. I immediately recognized the many benefits of the practice. This led me to travel to India to become a certified yoga instructor, under Yoga Vidya Gurukul. Ever since returning from India, I have been teaching consistently at the YMCA, Samatva Yoga Studio as well as a donation based yoga class in my neighbourhood park during the summer months. My teaching emphasizes proper breathing and alignment and aims to create a balanced body and calm mind. I strongly integrate this approach into my personal training and group fitness classes to help my clients and participants to become more mindfull of their body and breath.

Since the beginning of this year I have been running my own business, Sublime Fitness & Health. I have been training clients in my own home studio as well as in the comforts of their own home. I was also running outdoor bootcamps/circuit classes from the beginning of May to the end of August.

I am a skilled fitness, yoga and martial arts instructor of clients at every age level. I enjoy inspiring others to commit to long-term health and fitness goals.  I believe a healthy body and mind leads to an overall happier person. I believe that my patience, understanding and overall enthusiasm is the key to helping individuals realize that they are responsible for their overall success. My hopes are to use my diverse integrated approach to promote safe activities and coping methods that transform unhealthy habits into healthy lifestyles by reducing overall stress.
