I was a dancer through school. Once I got to college, I realized I needed more exercise. I took many PE classes and started distance running. A friend suggested I look at the group fitness instructor training. Appalachian State University had a fantastic instructor training program. For an entire semester we learned about different types of fitness classes and how to teach them. We were prepared to pass AFAA certification. The second semester we were in the program as an assistant instructor. That level of support allowed us to fine-tune our skills and continue exposure to different instructors and fitness classes.
After college, I moved to Asheville, NC, got married, and began teaching at Asheville Racquet Club. They had just started working with Les Mills Inc's programs. I was trained in BodyStep and BodyFlow. I continued to teach some freestyle classes, but fell in love with pre-choreographed programs. I taught group fitness through both of my pregnancies, until days before giving birth.
In 2015, I joined Asheville Aerial Arts and became a circus performer. Silks were fun, but I feel in love with contortion. Today, I teach contortion/flexibility at Empyrean Arts, as well as Les Mills BodyStep and BodyFlow in Asheville.
