Sam Kercheval

I grew up in Bloomington, IN and attended Bloomington High School South, playing 4-years of varsity tennis. During my high school career, I was named to the All-State Doubles postseason honor list twice as well as earning an Academic All-State Honorable Mention. After high school, I spent a year at DePauw University but 2 separate injuries during the fall and spring kept me from playing tennis in college. I transferred back to Indiana University to complete school after that year. I have a Bachelor of Science Management degree from Indiana University in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs(SPEA).

I am currently the Adult Program Coordinator at the Indiana University Tennis Center and am in my 7th full year teaching at IU. I pursued my USPTA certification and became a member in 2010 then upgrading to my current level, Elite Professional, in 2011. Since I began teaching I have known this the career for me. Tennis in high school and through the USTA has developed me as the person I am today through the opportunities I have had and the people who I have been surrounded by throughout my career.

In 2011, I was selected to be the next head coach for the girls’ tennis program at Bloomington South. Starting with my first season as coach, I realized how much fun it is to coach and develop not just one player, but a whole team and get them to play for each other and work towards team goals. We all know that there are financial barriers to entering the sport of tennis, as well as limited access to courts especially during winter. I want anyone who wants to experience and learn the game to have that opportunity and for many of the girls on my team this is the only way that could do it so I do not want to prevent them from the experience. I offer a no-cut program because I want anyone willing to come out and work for it to have the same opportunity to experience high school tennis that I did.
