I graduated from Clintwood HS (VA) in 1976 and went to Virginia Tech on a football scholarship. My high school football team had won 2 state championships and barely missed on a 3rd. I transferred to East Tennesse State University in the fall of 1977 and obtained a football scholarship there. I received my degree in Physical Education/Health in 1981 at ETSU. In the fall 1981, I was a graduate asst for the football team at North Texas State Univ. In 1982, I served in the same capacity at Louisiana Tech University, also serving as the running back coach at that time. In the fall of 1983, I began my teaching career in the state of Georgia.

Through my 30 years of teaching, I coached varsity football for 10 years, basketball at varying levels for 15 years, cross country for 8 years, and tennis for 25 years. In 25 years of coaching high schoool tennis, I had 18 teams make it to the state tournament. Three of those teams played for the state championship ('92, '94, and '96). My last 11 teams made it to the state tournament.

I retired  from teaching in the public schools in the spring of 2013. I have since began a career in teaching tennis. I am currently studying for certification with the USPTA.
