I began my initial journey into fitness and group classes as an Army Master Fitness trainer. After I left the military and moved to Milwaukee, I became ACE certified as both a group exercise instructor and personal trainer. I taught a variety of classes at the YMCA. I eventually was installed as the Fitness Coordinator for the Downtown YMCA. As I began to grow in my career with the YMCA as a manager and director, I always taught classes for the organization. I had the opportunity to attend a variety of wellness workshops and trainings, inlcuding Les Mills, Sarah City Workout and even the YMCA. I was certified as a YMCA group exercise instructor and trainer. As a trainer I delivered the YMCAs group exercise training. This was a one day training where new instructors learned the basics of teaching, safety cues and basic anatomy and human kinesiology.
Now I am teaching a variety of classes at Oakridge Fitness Center at The Landings Club in Savannah. Although many of my participants are retired, I teach to a diverse and varied audience. On the other end of the spectrum, I teach inclusive classes at Savannah State University. These classes include students and faculty.
As an instructor I believe in showing modifications and helping all participants feel successful in their decision to join one of my classes. I am a firm believer in setting goals for the class. This helps members focus on something new, even when the program or choreography are not. I always make myself available to clients to hear their questions, comments and suggestions.
