My story begins as a member of the gym in 2007. I would curiously watch people leave the cycle room and noticed they were dripping in sweat and looked just a bit beaten up. Needless to say I wanted in! I was reluctant and a bit nervous in that first class but in no time was hooked. However after several months, I wasn’t getting everything out of the class that I needed. I started to keep a mental list of things that would make the class more enjoyable, staying hopeful that I would find the right fit. I wanted to feel motivated, courageous and inspired all while listening to great music! Still nothing. So in the words of Maya Angelou, "If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude." In order to get what I needed, and it seemed like my fellow riders were longing for, I would have to do it myself. The following year in 2008 I became a certified Spinning instructor. And to my surprise I have found something very special in my role as an instructor. I discovered my niche and it was no longer about what I needed in class. It has become a truly amazing way to share my passion and help members be the best they can possibly be. I consider myself one of the most fortunate people on earth because of that. It is humbling and heartwarming to be able to have a profound impact on someone, and this inspires me even more than I could have ever imagined. Being able to coach my riders to push themselves out of their comfort zones, giving them the confidence to stay there, despite how awful it feels, and then to try it again moves me with every ride.
I have gone from teaching my very first class one night a week with 8 members to now teaching four times a week with a full room. I use visual cues, breathing techniques, a mindfulness of why you are there and of course great music from every decade to keep members motivated in my classes. With me, what you see is what you get. I believe in indoor cycling. It really does work and hopefully riders see this in me; and that it endears them to my classes and allows them to trust me.
When I am not in the cycle studio you could find me working at my other job as an HR and Finance Administrator, cutting the lawn, planting flowers in my yard or enjoying a few cold ones on my deck while I lie in the sun. I have 3 wonderful children and a loving husband that support me in all I do, which makes it easy to turn dreams into reality.
