Kathryn Downie

Kate Downie has been teaching yoga in NYC for the past year and a half. She completed her first Hatha Yoga teacher training at the Yoga Vidya Dham ashram in Nasik, Mahastra, India. She continued traveling throughout India studying yoga and the dharma of Buddhism with Tibetan monks in Dharamsala at various institutes. In 2005 she completed her second teacher training in Hatha Vinyasa Yoga at Om Yoga Center in NYC with Jennifer Brilliant and Frank Mauro. Kate started her yoga practice at the age of 18 in Puerto Rico and has kept a daily practice for over five years. She teaches to pass on what her great teachers a have passed on to her.

Through flowing asanas, breath awareness, and meditation, she asks her students to take a profound look at the tendencies of their bodies, contributing to a more profound understanding to tendencies of their minds. In her class she teaches not just flexibility and strength but openness and heroism, encouraging her students to truly understand the difference. She strives to discover the internal, imperishable self that is the indweller of our bodies. She believes that in doing so we are more able to fulfill our potential as human beings and unlock and release again the flow of life into the body of the world.

“The two – the hero and his ultimate god, the seeker and the found – are thus understood as the outside and inside of a single, self-mirrored mystery, which is identical with the mystery of the manifest world. The great deed of the supreme hero is to come to the knowledge of this unity in multiplicity and then to make it know.” Joseph Campbell
