I am a certified Power Yoga teacher at the 200 hour level (RYT 200) and am a Yoga Alliance member. I am currently teaching at Hot Yoga Ocean Avenue, 1637 Ocean Avenue, San Francisco, California which is a Registered Yoga School (RYS) with Yoga Alliance. Below are descriptions of the current classes I am teaching:
Power/Vinyasa Yoga: a dynamic, energizing and fluid practice of yoga where I guide students through sequential poses (including Sun Salutations) with emphasis on connecting breath to movement. This style is closely modeled after the Ashtanga method but does not follow a set series of poses. Each class contains a blend of fluid movements and longer holds to best access and utilize the power in each unique body and ultimately preparing it for meditation. Modifications are offered for all abilities in order to make the class accessible to all levels. Students can expect a blend of breath work, strength, flexibility, balance, physical and mental stamina to challenge their body and help to develop steadiness of mind and freedom of vital life force energy.
Yinyasa: a class which provides a balanced mixture of Vinyasa sequential movement (see above) and Yin asana. Yin Yoga targets the connective tissues, such as the ligaments, bones and joints of the body (which include the hips, thighs and lower spinal area) that are normally not exercised much in a more active style of asana practice. My classes typically begin with a series of gentle warm-up postures and progress to include Sun Salutations and sequential poses for a portion of the class. Once the body is warmed up, I incorporate multiple restorative Yin yoga postures, which are typically held 3-5 minutes (or longer) in order for the student to stretch/access the deep layers of fascial tissues.
Yin: a slower paced style of yoga where asana sequences are held for longer periods of time and applies moderate stress to the connective tissues with the aim of increasing flexibility, circulation and joint mobility. Through incorporating hip openers, forward folds, backward bends and twists, Yin yoga facilitates the ability to remain in seated meditation by keeping the spine upright, without strain or slouching so that energy can run freely up and down the spine.
Hot Yoga/Hot Foundations method: All level yoga class, practiced in a heated room, based on the Bikram sequence method (Hot Yoga) of 26 poses & 2 breathing exercises. The second sequence method is called Hot Foundations which incorporates Surya Namaskara C, astanding series, spine strenthening asanas, core and floor series These classes are taught in durations of either 60, 75 or 90 minutes – depending on the class length some postures are practiced twice and some postures are practiced once.
Yoga Sculpt: a Power based yoga asana series (varied) that energizes and strengthens the body. This class style incorporates hand weights and other strength building modalities, with an additional emphasis on core conditioning.
On a personal note, I have been practicing yoga consistently since 2006 and continue to receive many of its benefits mentally, emotionally and physically. My goal is to guide students through a fluid, dynamic and/or restorative yoga class, establish a safe environment and assist them in preparing their bodies for meditation. It is fulfilling for me to witness the transformation/shift in students through yoga.
