Shannon Sharma

Shannon has been teaching yoga for 19 years and considers herself as a resource for the power of love.  She has a wealth of knowledge in multiple disciplines including but not limited to:  Yoga, Pranayama, Gait Therapy, Philosophy, Anatomy of Yoga and Movement, as well as, Ayurveda.  She specializes in pain management, particularly conditions related to sitting, standing walking and even sleeping posture.  Shannon also takes great pride in cultivating empowered and awakened teachers that share the gifts of alignment based vinyasa yoga.  She teaches from the heart and shares the point of view that safety and ahimsa are the priority both in the classroom and in life.

Here is a glimpse into her life story as it pertains to becoming a yoga teacher:

Initially she charted unknown terrain in Carefree, Arizona and slowly ambled her way towards a serious vinyasa practice.  Originally, she had a deep and transformational experience in her first mountain pose.  Her whole body was awakened and she experienced a moment of true peace for the first time in her life.  This experienced would be the catalyst to an entirely knew way of being and living.

Shannon began studying yoga therapy, from the late and revered, Mukunda Stiles in early 2000.  Since she practiced in Arizona, mostly from books and self-study, she was connected to a unique approach towards the practice.  She was unaware of the popularity and the culture that was thriving particularly in California.  At that time, the internet was not filled with a tremendous amount of music, books or videos.   This lead to a more internal and experimental path and she studied without a true teacher for a very long time.  She took her first teachers training in 2001 and she was even more confused as a result.  Her long held quest for knowledge and the truth led her to The Bihar School of Yoga in India.  She happened to discover a Swami that was traveling the United States and visiting Arizona.  She arranged a workshop for him at the school where she was teaching in Scottsdale.  This was the first time she felt the presence of the true yoga she was looking for and was unable to find.  She received some of the most important books of her life, The Hatha Yoga Pradipika and Asana, Pranayama, Mudra, Bandha.  These two books became her closest friends.  She studied them inside and out and realized there was a way to help herself and others to truly heal from suffering.

In 2002 Saul David Ray and Shiva Rea came to a yoga conference and taught Shannon that there were other disciplines to add to the healing journey.  She learned from Shiva music and sequencing and from Saul, Thai Yoga Therapy.  They both made such a lasting impression on her heart that she decided to follow them to Los Angeles to Yoga Works.  She began traveling to LA regularly and this is when she was amazed by the community.  It felt like home to her, loving, kind and courageous beings of light all working out their karma.  Soon after, a new studio opened Sacred Movement and everyone Shannon loved moved there.  It was different, softer and more gentle.  Shannon felt more connection and ease in her path just by being in the space.  Often times, she would go and sit quietly inside for hours reading her books.  She had found her people and it was wonderful.

In 2003, she moved to study with two principal teachers and she began to assist both of them.  Sherry Brourman to this day is her most trusted source of healing.  The other teacher shall remain unnamed. Sometimes, even in yoga relationships can break and the wounds run deep.  This lesson taught Shannon, ironically, the beauty of forgiveness.  As her path continued to unfold she traveled a lot teaching and assisting in neighboring cities and states until she arrived in Washington, DC.  Another life transition awaited her and this would be the greatest gift of all.

Around Shannon’s 38th birthday she flew to DC to explore the idea of moving.  It was another great adventure and there was so much to be learned.  Shannon quickly realized after taking a number of classes at multiple studios that DC that it resembled Arizona.  It was new, fresh and also in great need of more experienced teachers and healers.  She quickly booked all of her sessions and filled workshops on multiple trips to DC and Bethesda.  As a result of the large impact she decided to relocate.  She also held a secret in her heart, a husband.  Somehow, Shannon felt deeply she would find the man she would marry and settle once and for all.  She did, and she was married to Sameer Sharma in 2013.

Now, there is another very special component to Shannon’s journey,  she co-created the yoga community at One Aum in Potomac, MD.  It is a special place of transformation, love and empowerment.  A home for all others to share and feel safe, loved and accepted. One Aum has reached far and wide as the resource for all students. In the words of the great Krishnamacharya, yoga is for all people young, old, weak and strong.  One Aum has followed in the same tradition offering Yoga Therapy to a variety of health conditions particularly working with pain and its causes.  Ayurvedic guidance to heal lifestyle and increase well being.  Classes for absolute beginners and all the way to very advanced teachers.

Shannon ended her teaching journey last year after she had two neck operations.  As she navigated through

Shannon sends this message to you: Love yourself and other’s the way you were intended to at your birth.  This is the time, you are the person and your heart is the space to embark and unfold your healing journey.  The magic awaits ~
