I was born and raised in Littleton, Colorado and this is where I have lived and worked for the past 44 years. I attended Colorado State University (1995-1999), and graduated with a double major in History and Secondary Education; in 2007 I earned my Masters of Arts in Counseling. I completed my first 100 hour yoga training in 2007, and I have spent the last 22 years teaching and counseling teenagers at Dakota Ridge High School in Littleton, Colorado.
I first started teaching high school in August of 1999, 4 moths after, and 5 miles away from the shootings at Columbine High School (April, 1999). This was the community I grew up in and went to school in, and now I found myself on the other end; teaching students who were so traumatized from the events of the mass-shooting, they had to find a new start. I started teaching realizing that my job is more than teaching content, it is to help others learn how to navigate through this crazy, unpredictable world. In the past 18 years, I have taught U.S. History, Government, Geography, Sociology, Philosophy and Economics. I was the Social Studies department chair for 14 years, and I am now in the process of building an career internship based program for our at-risk students. I have used yoga as a way to help students find a bridge between the physical and mental demands of this world.
I a mother, and my two children are the love of my life. I have an 8 year old and a 6 year old who constantly keep me moving. Our little family of 3 enjoys spending time outside - hiking, riding bikes, swimming, playing at parks, and of course we love a good pizza and movie night!
Personally, traveling and yoga are my passions. Traveling allows me to view the world from different perspectives, to take a step back and to truly evaluate my place and role in the this giant world. Yoga allows me to reflect on my thoughts and actions, and this practice provides a safe place, a happy place, inspiration and unconditional love that I can carry with me both on and off my mat.
