My first experience in fitness was after an injury. I wanted to get back into shape so I started attending step aerobics class. This was back in the 1990's so the format was just getting popular. The instructor/owner of the facility asked if I would like to teach. I studied and earned a certificate from the Athletics and Fitness Association of America as a group fitness instructor and a step instructor. I taught for a few years before having my son. Life took a detour and I didn't teach for several years.
I have always enjoyed attending fitness classes. I took dance lessons (tap, ballet, jazz) since I was 5 years old, so I have always loved working out/dancing in a group. I was also a cheerleader starting from 8 years old cheering on my brother's football team. I continued to attend group fitness classes. When one facility didn't offer a class I liked, they suggested I get certified and teach it. That is when I took training for kickboxing and began teaching again. Each year I have trained on additional formats including strength, step, and stretching.
My diverse experience allows me to teach classes to different types of people in many formats.
