I first became interested in the practice of Yoga prior to having my first child. A few times a week, I participated in prenatal yoga, noticing the huge impact it made in hip mobility and the comfort I felt within my body. Then I connected with a 500 hour yoga practitioner who taught Hatha Yoga at my local gym. I fell in love with the true sense of calm and peace that filled my body and mind after a class. After continuing my study of yoga through hot yoga and traditional studio classes, I became interested in becoming certified as a practitioner. In 2019, I became a certified Yoga Instructor through Yoga Alliance. Since this time, I teach weekly Vinyasa flow and Yin yoga classes at Salisbury Country Club. In addition, I had the opportunity to teach daily group classes at a resort in Punta Cana. For continuing education, I’ve completed sequencing classes and received a certification as an Ayurvedic Health counselor. Within the school system, I am also able to use my knowledge of the yoga practice with students (often used as a preparatory activity prior to academics), to increase participation and engagement in school-related activities.
In addition to serving as a Yoga Instructor, I am the owner of Pediatric Therapies, Inc. and received my degree in occupational therapy from James Madison University. I have over nearly 20 years of experience in pediatric occupational therapy. Prior to serving as a pediatric occupational therapist, I worked in a variety of settings, serving the adult and geriatric population. I have been in school-based practice, providing therapy services to students in schools since 2002 and privately contracting services since 2005. For over a decade, I worked with students (many with special needs) on yoga positioning, flows and mindfulness to improve attention to task, range of motion, flexibility and strength. Recently, I decided to further this knowledge of yoga by taking a 200 hour training course through YogaWorks.
I maintain strong working relationships with clients I serve through regular and open communication. I love working with both children and adults and feel very fortunate to work alongside such wonderful therapists and yogis and in a career I truly love. After gaining more knowledge of specifics regarding the practice (through the certification process), I am enjoying the opportunity to provide skilled yoga services to both children and adults.
As an occupational therapy practitioner in the school system, I love the opportunity to use specific expertise to address student needs. With the ultimate goal being full participation in the educational environment, I enjoy observing students and providing strategies to facilitate engagement in school-related activities. It is rewarding to work with teachers and other team members to support student success by developing instructional strategies for ongoing implementation in the classroom.
Outside of work, I enjoy walking, swimming, teaching and practicing yoga, dining out with friends, cooking, volunteering and spending time with family. She resides with her husband and their two children in the Richmond area.
