Colin Stokes

Hello,

I am very excited to become a part of your team and contribute to the experience that you and your staff are known for around the world. I have a wealth of experience that will add value to the product that your resort will deliver to its guests and clients who are looking for a five star experience. I have recently started my own tennis academy and actively pursuing a career as a tennis instructor and fitness enthusiast.

My work experience is vast and varied. I began working for the Westin Hotel Ottawa property after graduating from University with a Bachelors Degree in Economics, and enjoyed my time in the service industry as a valet attendant and bar staff. It was in the hotel industry that I learned the value of service distinctiveness and the importance of meeting the client’s needs. Although I learned valuable skills at the Westin, I had aspired to be a police officer in order to help people in a way that capitalized on my athletic ability and people skills. I left the Westin and began my policing career as a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police working in Langley, British Columbia. After 3 years, I then started a new career with the Ottawa Police Service where I have worked in several different sections gaining experience and skills with each new position as well as managerial skills as I climbed the ranks to my current rank of Staff Sergeant. My current assignment is Watch Commander in charge of our Strategic Operations Centre.

I gained experience teaching and instructing in several disciplines within the world of policing. I was honoured to earn a position on our elite Tactical Unit where I was a Use of Force Instructor, Pistol Instructor, and MP-5 (assault weapon) Instructor. I deployed to Afghanistan with the RCMP as part of Canada’s contribution to the NATO mission to train and mentor the Afghan National Police. I delivered basic training, leadership training and weapons instruction to their nascent police service over a 9 month period. After successfully completing the Senior Police Administrator Course, delivered at the Canadian Police College, I was invited back to instruct some of the modules and score the candidates business cases. I have been fortunate enough to have enjoyed a 28 year career in policing that has given me opportunities and experience that I am eager to apply to my new position as I transition to a new career.

I have a good heart sensitive to the needs of people around me. I had volunteered at our local Distress Centre to help the people of Ottawa when they needed someone to listen to them. The training and skills I learned at the Distress Centre allowed me to excel as a Crisis Negotiator for the Ottawa Police. I received my accreditation as a certified Tennis Instructor from Tennis Canada as a result of my love for the sport of tennis. I volunteer at my local club to teach young children and share my enthusiasm for the sport. I also coach my 12 year old son’s little league baseball team every year. I play tennis regularly both singles and doubles; and I am very passionate about the sport. I envision myself instructing tennis as my next career and will orient my efforts with this goal in mind. I am a proven team player and work very well as part of a group as I have been part of many teams operating in high stress situations.

I look forward to discussing opportunities with your team so I can contribute to your mission.

Respectfully,

Colin Stokes
