When I began my own yoga journey a few years ago, I could not have predicted where it would lead.  It began with a small but persistent feeling that there had to be something more.  My job as a financial analyst requires little movement and on a typical day I sit for ten hours or more.  When we sit in excess, our joints, muscles, tendons and fascia adapt to this position causing our hip flexors to shorten, weaken, and tighten.  Tight hips are linked to back pain, muscle aches, and weakness in other muscles.  Moving in one direction over and over again can have a negative effect on the quality of tissue, promoting poor movement quality and posture degradation.

Between the commute to and from work, and the desk job that many of us have today, our bodies can develop an imbalance as muscle groups work against each other.  At 31 years old, I was experiencing "achiness" on a daily basis, and some days the stiffness was so bad I could barely reach down to tie my shoes, or turn my head to check for traffic.  I realized that if I didn't start taking care of my body now, it would only get worse from here.

Six years into my practice, I have found the benefits reach far beyond the physical.  In addition to body awareness, greater range of motion, and increased strength, I have better concentration and focus.  I continue to experience a deeper connection with myself and the world around me.  The past several years have been a healing experience for me and I hope that others are able to benefit from some of the things I have learned on my journey.
