Charl van der Merwe

Charl van der Merwe, a  native of South Africa has been coaching in Connecticut, USA, for the past 17 years. Currently, he is the Director of Tennis, Pickleball and Paddle at The Field Club of Greenwich located in Greenwich, Connecticut. Charl leads a staff of 8 pros, running programs with 8 clay courts, 5 grass courts, 4 paddle courts, and 2 indoor tennis courts.

van der Merwe's passion for tennis coupled with his detailed approach and communicative personality, has contributed to his success both on and off the court. He connects well with players of all ages by showing his genuine commitment to their growth and love for the sport. His approach, expertise, and dedication is evidenced by the tremendous growth in participation across Ladies, Men's, and Youth players. To capture interest, improve functional performance, and build critical sportsmanship skills, weekly groups and events are offered to players of all ages. From cardio-style point play to round robins to competitive matches for high-level players, Charl's comprehensive and captivating program ensures that players of all ability levels feel that they have a place on the tennis court. Friday night social point play, hosting up to 60 players of all ages, is of particular interest and slots fill up rapidly with increasing wait lists each week. 

van der Merwe has over 10 years of High-Performance teaching experience with TennisCT. He has learned from and worked with leading experts in the field including Rick Ferman, former coach of Todd Martin, a retired ATP player with a career high singles ranking of #4 in the world. van der Merwe has extensive knowledge and success in the field. He has organized and directed many levels of high performance youth tennis including 14 & Under and 12 & Under age divisions with USTA Sectional and National Rankings. van der Merwe led a 14 & Under advanced team which competed at the USTA National Championships in 2010.
