Stefan A. Hagerup is an Associate Director in the Division of Enforcement and Investigation of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board in Washington, D.C., where he focuses on investigations and adjudications involving registered public accounting firms and persons associated with such firms. The PCAOB is a private-sector, non-profit corporation, created by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, to oversee the auditors of public companies in order to protect the interests of investors and further the public interest in the preparation of informative, fair and independent audit reports.
Prior to joining the PCAOB in July 2006, Mr. Hagerup spent several years at the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, where he was a senior counsel in the Division of Enforcement’s Financial Fraud Task Force. In this capacity, Mr. Hagerup conducted litigations and investigations of accounting and other financial-related frauds, including the litigation against KPMG LLP, the former auditor of Xerox Corporation, and five KPMG partners, for their roles in Xerox’s $6.1 billion financial fraud. This case was considered one of the most important accounting fraud litigations in SEC history and resulted in record penalties against the firm and the individual audit partners.
Prior to joining the SEC, Mr. Hagerup was in private practice at the Washington, D.C. law firm of Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld, where he specialized in the defense of businesses in civil litigation. Before entering private practice, Mr. Hagerup clerked for Judge John Coffey of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.
