I am a retired police officer. Several years ago, I found my new love and the fastest growing sport in North America, pickleball. Starting as a novice player, I’ve worked my way to a 3.5 tournament player through passion and dedication. It helps keep me fit, losing 40 lbs. I enjoy playing on the courts, enjoying a victory, congratulating my opponent with their win, touching paddles at the net, congratulating each other for the game and the extra efforts to score a point. Most importantly, for the fun and finding new friends.
I’ve introduced pickleball to many friends and family members. Starting as beginners, I’ve slowly groomed the newcomers, instructing them with the basics, then improving their skills implementing techniques, strategies and positioning. My wife now enjoys the game more as her skill level has improved. Being my partner or opponent, the game is fun and afterwards we discuss the point won or lost with a smile. My sister now plays in Scottsdale AZ at a 3.8 tournament level. Another friend that I brought onto the courts has recently played at the Minto US OPEN in Naples FL winning two golds and a silver in the 4.5 level.
Again, fun is the object of the game but it is necessary to stress the importance of safety. Pickleball is the fastest growing sport and so are injuries associated with the game. Many times a passionate 60 yr old player who thinks they have a 33 yr old brain plays to make a shot. The math doesn’t compute. Injuries can occur. It’s important to stress that we’re playing for fun. Play at your level and your abilities. It’s no fun, with your arm in a sling, watching a game from the sidelines and the other players having fun.
I am trained in First Aid, CPR & Defibrillator. Recently my friend passed out on the court after suffering a heart attack. I performed CPR for several minutes until EMS arrived. To this date, my friend continues to play.
I vacationed at the HILTON, LaRomana, Dominican Republic this past March 1st, 2025. On day one I met the pickleball coach from Cambridge MASS. She recognized my level of play and we enjoyed a few games. Day two she was overwhelmed with vacationers and she divided her group, allowing me to instruct half of the group. It was then that I decided I should obtain my coaching certificate and join Fit Bodies.
I was fortunate to have passionate instructors helping me to improve my game. Now is my time to 'Play it Forward'
