Susan Winkler has been studying yoga for 10 years, gaining her teaching certification through a 700-hour teacher-training program.  The teacher-training program Susan completed included studying the yoga asanas (postures), pranayama (breath), meditation, and bandhas, as well as yoga philosophy, Bhaghavad Gita and Yoga Sutras.

Susan has continued her studies under the tutelage of Amita Shankar, a renowned yoga teacher from The Yoga Institute in Bombay.  Amita is a student of Swami Dayananda Saraswati, the revered traditional teacher of Vedanta. Amita has coined the term: Off-The-Mat -Yoga: integrating Yoga with life itself.  Amita’s  “ Yoga Lifestyle Program for Health Happiness and Harmony” offers students an opportunity to visit their inner sanctuary and bask in its light and wisdom.

Susan has continued to attend yogic workshops on subjects such as human anatomy, prenatal yoga, and tantra yoga.  She has also studied many related areas such as meditative movement/dance, holistic health, nutrition, and Reiki.  Susan follows a vegetarian diet, organic whenever possible, and loves cooking food that is both healthy and tasty!

Susan spent years teaching at several yoga schools and fitness centers, and has now opened her own yoga studio, Yoga Vayu, in downtown New Brunswick.  Susan believes in the holistic approach to health and well being through activities that lift the soul and allow individuals to tune into their bodies and their creative self.  Yoga Vayu is a center for all-around well being, offering massage, Reiki, Ayurvedic consultation and treatment, tabla drumming, Afro-Caribbean drumming, and several cultural dance styles.

Susan believes strongly in the power of yoga to relieve mental and emotional stress, allowing students to find peace and comfort within themselves.

Stress can manifest itself in the body as physical ailments such as high blood pressure, heart disease, migraines, asthma, and digestive problems, as well as mental ailments such as depression, anxiety and insomnia.   Through meditation and relaxation techniques, the body can begin to heal itself.  This is the main focus of Susan’s classes, incorporating postures that improve the body’s flexibility and strength, as well as breathing exercises and meditations that calm the mind and allow the students to begin their quest for self-knowledge and transformation to a happier, healthier being.
