Will Stewart

Will H. Stewart II, a native of Washington DC, is a certified Pilates and yoga instructor, Budokon instructor, personal trainer and massage therapist. A life long athlete, he has participated in basketball, football, track and field, martial arts (bando, jujistsu, akido, and karate), and gymnastics. While attending the George Washington University, Will suffered a rotator cuff injury while bodybuilding. During his rehabilitation, he decided to restart his yoga practice that begun in high school with his aunt, also a yoga teacher. He became hooked on the physical, spiritual and mental benefits of yoga. His first teacher at GW in 2000, trained Will in the Iyengar style. However, he soon found his way to the Ashtanga then Vinyasa flow. After two years of practicing yoga 6 days a week, he finally took the plunge and went for a yoga teacher training in Maya Tulum, Mexico with Baron Baptiste in 2002. In 2006, Will discovered Budokon created by Kancho Cameron Shayne. Fusing Yoga, Martial Arts and Meditation, Budokon has taken Will to a higher level of teaching and athletics.

Will began teaching yoga for the DC Alpha Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon while he was teaching music and working as the Coordinator for the Performing Arts department at St. Albans School for boys located on the grounds of the Washington National Cathedral. One of his many jobs at St. Albans was teaching yoga to the boys in grades 9-12. Will credits this as being one of the best experiences on the road to becoming a great teacher. While he was teaching, he continued practicing and soon became certified in Pilates with Powerhouse Pilates and became a certified personal trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. As a member of the Sports Medicine staff, Will was able to work with athletes on both the training and post rehabilitation aspects. He has seen how the different modalities that he uses all work in concert to increase healing and overall performance.

Will recently finished his 600 hour training at the National Massage Therapy Institute and will take his National certification exam in June 2007. In this time, Will was able to learn Swedish and Deep-tissue massage, aromatherapy, reflexology, muscle energy techniques and sports massage.

To deepen his knowledge of the body, Will also is a 2008 Fellow of the prestigious Gray Institute for Functional Transformation led by renowned physical therapist, Gary Gray where all aspects of Applied Functional Science are explored, explained and applied in depth.

In yoga, his teaching style is a mix of the precision of alignment of Iyengar with the athletic flowing style of Vinyasa complete with the integral practices of pranayama and meditation. He believes that we are all beings of energy. However, sometimes that energy becomes unbalanced, stagnant or depleted and we need to find ways to return to a homeostasis. Yoga, Pilates, Budokon, massage, nutrition, strength and cardio training, breathing techniques and meditation are paths Will guides his students to in order to rebalance mind, body and spirit. He has taught in Washington, DC, Maryland, Virginia and even in China. Will’s clients include CEO’s, Hollywood celebrities, professional athletes, high school and Division I athletes, and the fitness-oriented population of the greater Washington DC area.

His passion for the physical, mental and spiritual sides of our existence continually pushes Will to train, research, teach so that he can assist his fellow man in reaching their Divine Potential.
