Below is an essay I wrote to enter the Trek Woman Essay. I believe this will tell you a little bit about who I am.I’ve always considered myself a multi-tasker. So while attending school, working part-time, and being a wife and mother of two, I decided to start training for a triathlon. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy, but I wanted a challenge. What I found while embarking on this new endeavor was an incredible support system. My local YMCA had a triathlon class, which was my first step. Even though I hadn’t swum a lap since I was 18, I figured it was like riding a bike. You never forget, right? So I headed out to the local sporting goods store, since I knew my tankini wasn’t the right choice for competitive swimming, because, of course, I had to look the part. One swimsuit and a pair of goggles later, and I was ready. Yeah right! Not quite. After one swim class, it was back to the sporting goods store I went. I realized then that this new adventure took me away from on-line browsing “Pottery Barn†to swim, cycling and running paraphernalia. I appreciated all the advice from my new friends, and I became familiar with the local specialized bike and running stores. Their wealth of knowledge and advice helped me make the right choices for me. I was finally inspired to ride my first biking event, and started training with my local bike shop. I purchased a brand new, stylish, sport specific helmet, since I felt my “Walmart†helmet wasn’t up to par. Riding with a group of women bolstered my confidence and empowered and inspired me. I didn’t know anyone, but that didn’t matter. We were supportive of one another. Finally, I was ready for my first race. I signed up for a 15-mile course. On a borrowed hybrid bike, I was ready. On race morning, I arrived at the event and forgot my helmet. One call home and my husband was on his way. Thus my racing career began with a slight bump in the road.Next, I looked forward to joining my friends at the Lance Armstrong “LiveStrong Challenge†event near our hometown. I was inspired to ride with my friend who had been battling cancer for the past few years. Unfortunately, I would not have that opportunity; she had lost her battle with cancer. However, this past summer, we rode in her honor. This event touched me in a way I simply had not expected. It was incredibly emotional, inspiring and life changing. We can get so wrapped up in things that most likely won’t matter weeks from now. Life is precious. Be generous and thankful. I hope my new adventures inspire others to do what they can to stay healthy, and enjoy life to its fullest. At the end of each race, I look for my family who is always there to support me.For me it all started with a simple bike race. And, in just a year I’ve accomplished more than I could have imagined. Can’t wait for the next event!First Year of RacingGirls with Gear, Limerick, PA 15 milesStrides for Hope, Sprint Mount, PA5K RunFrench Creek Iron Tour, Kimberton PA 50 milesSheRox Triathlon, Philadelphia, PA ½ swim, 16 mile bike, 5 K runLiveStrong Challenge, Philadelphia, PA 45 Mile BikeMarshMan Triathlon, Downingtown, PA ¼ swim 11 bike 2 mile runING.
